Remona Jeannine is a singer-songwriter based in Durham, NC.
Her voice has been described as smooth, melodic, and vulnerable. She often performs solo, accompanying herself with an Alvarez acoustic guitar. Flat picking and starch dynamic contrasts are two of her favorite things. Ella Fitzgerald’s brilliant vocals were formational as she fostered her own vocal sound.
Her upcoming album Is This Forgiveness? is a grief project. The songs consist of small and big moments of despair, rage, and resignation. As with most grief work hope glints and healing calls around the corner.
how it started
I sang from the beginning and listened to my father playing guitar often, including regularly singing together as a family. My older sister taught me my first chords and the classic down-down-up-up-down-up strum. We would spend hours from singing from our father’s large, overly thick binder full of praise and worship music. After repeated requests dad spent less than 10 minutes giving me all the instruction he could bare. He demonstrated briefly a finger picking pattern without much further guidance or time to mimic.
Lesson 1: (1) Learn to feel it out, (2) just practice.
